Having kids and helping the planet: A dilemma with a simple affordable solution
You’d love to be a parent but you also love the planet. Having a new child can create a burden on the planet because more people means more resources are used, like food, water, and energy. This leads to more pollution and harm to nature. So this is a big dilemma? Well, maybe not. You could offset your pregnancy by purchasing cheaper foreign carbon offsets. And it would likely cost you less than 1/40th of a USA carbon offset right now, for the entire lifetime of your child… comparatively very affordable.
Discussions around the environmental impact of a new child are not new, with plenty of articles available.
There was significant concern several years ago: What’s Your Baby’s Carbon Footprint?
And more recently in 2022 where there’s debate on the level of concern warranted: Analysis | Should you not have kids because of climate change? It’s complicated.
Here we now present a novel solution, to alleviate the burden on an overheating world.
In USA, the price of carbon is ~$20 per ton. But in India for example, the price can be ~$0.50 per ton, much lower. The earth’s atmosphere is the same globally, so why not purchase offsets where they are much cheaper? You can do so at the UN Carbon Offset Platform.

This article is only a suggestion that we hope you find helpful. It’s up to you to decide what makes sense to you. So consider offsetting the carbon footprint of a child, at least as a simple solution available to mitigate climate change. This is in addition to your other solutions such as an electric car and lifestyle changes like reducing consumption.
